I am Trying to Find Some Good Origami Tools

Hello everyone. I have been making origami art pieces for quite some time now and I believe that most of the process can be executed without the help of any tools. However, as I started making more complicated structures, I have realized that tools like rulers, scissors, and paper trimmers do save a lot of your time and helps in getting a cleaner output. As of now, I have been using only basic tools that I mentioned above, however, it would be great if you guys could suggest some useful and easy-to-find (may be things that can be found at home) tools that I could work with.

Contrary to what most people believe, origami art does include the use of adhesive here and there to make the model sturdier. Generally, while making origami people prefer to use glue, but I find double sided tape dispensers to be way better. They are not sticky or messy, and with one simple slide you can get your sides attached.

I totally disagree with your idea of using double sided sticky tapes rather than glue. Because the glue on the tapes are likely to wear off but the liquid adhesive tends to be a more permanent solution.

One of the most useful, easy to find and affordable origami tools that I came across is chopsticks. They are great to create curled edges when we make decorative items like petal, flowers, small pockets, etc. They also work wonders as a paper folding tool. So if you don't have a bone folder, you can certainly use chopsticks as a cost-effective replacement.

I always have trouble getting a round-edge accurately, and chopsticks seem to be a great tool that I can use. I have only been using my ruler as a paper folder so I guess I shall give your suggestion a try. Thanks a lot.

Sometimes during the crafting process we come across a rather difficult fold and this is when I use a scoring tool to get the fold accurate. Scoring tools come in various sizes and shapes that are easily available in the market. However, you can also use an empty gel pen as a substitute as it does the job just as well as any scoring tool.

An empty gel pen is actually a great substitute for scoring paper. I have been looking for a replacement and this is by far one of the best substitutes that I've found and I often recommend it my other friends as well. What a way to make use of the scrap lying in your house.

Generally you will find great origami tools in and around your house itself. Tweezers are one of the tools that you will definitely have with you and it works great when you fold miniature origami. When it comes to folding this smaller proportion of origami, your fingers are just too large to fold and end up creasing the paper. And that is where tweezers work their magic. Basically there are two types of tweezers - straight ones and the one with bent tips. Personally I like to use the one with straight tips just because they are easy to use and I happen to have them at home.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have myself learnt the fact that most of the store bought origami tools can actually be found in the comfort of our homes. Straight tweezers do seem to have a strong hold on the origami as compared to the bent ones. I intend to work on miniature origamis soon and when I do, I am definitely going to give tweezers a try. Thanks once again.
