Washi Tapes

Hey everyone! What a lovely day we have today - or at least I do. I feel so energized, woke up at 6 am and I just keep doing so many great and creative things today. Amazing energy, you just can't stop loving Sunday when you finally have some time off from work and you can focus on everything you love and do all the stuff, that you usually don't have much time for. Sure, cleaning the house, like I always do on Sundays is not so appealing, but still it's a fairly relaxing activity :)

Okay, let's start on Washi tapes. I was browsing Aliexpress tonight and I found quite a nice collection of washi tapes, that are greay to decorate basically anything. Washi tapes are for example great for all kind of colored journals, self-made albums with photos or greeting cards. But of course, you can also use them decorate pencils, pens or all kind of containers, even a candle though (this is what I have yet to do) - all you have to do is to simply glue it with a regular heater and you can create a simple fridge magnets for examle. Lots of uses to be honest, basically depends on your imagination, nothing else. I have decorated a few pencils and pens with them and applied two to my self-made photo albums. I will sure come up with other ideas soon, I just have to make more Washi tapes first and then I'm sure the ideas will start popping. You look at your Washi tape and you instantly know where you would like to apply it. I love it to be honest.

Sure, you can order them very cheaply online, but then again, as I am an origami fan and despite not having much experience, I just love to create things, even if it takes me quite a lot of time to do so.
So, I thought to myself: Why not? Those Washi tapes look fairly easy and there is tons of instructions out there on how to do them, so I started doing them. Took me around 5 hours of working non-stop to master how to do them, but I have managed to create 7 different Washi tapes. Those found on the internet somehow looked better, but professionals also know how to take great photos etc., so let's say mine were equally good :P But yes, overall I'm very happy with my efforts, it was pretty easy, just as I have expected, so nobody should actually encounter any problems during making them, but if you were to, let me know in this thread and I will do my best to help you.

So what about you, have you ever built any Washi tapes before? If so, what did you with them?

Well, I'm pretty new to Origami, but I will make sure to try and make those Washi tapes. I have just checked some at the aliexpress as well as other decoration-focused websites and they look absolutely brilliant. As you said, there is quite a lot of tutorials on how to make them and it doesn't seem to be especially difficult, so even a beginner like me should do it :P Well, if I dont, then I'm really even below the level, that I was actually anticipating myself to be. We will see, but I have high hopes for this, thanks for sharing this amazing idea with us :)

Ayy, the nostalgy comes upon me when I look at my old Washi tapes. Don't get me wrong, I still make them from time to time, but rather just to create something, anything actually, as I already have applied them eveywhere I could and frankly have no further use for them. Sure, your imagination is the key figure before all that, but the fact is that where else am I going to apply it? I have probably made over 200 of Washi tapes in my life and only found enough room to apply like 30-35 of them, and that's by decorating the very same thing with loads of them. I applied them to my albums, pencils, pens, clippers, made fridge magnets, made tiny flags, changed the design of my computer keyboard, marked a calendar, made my clothes pins cuter, even covered my laptop a little bit. Frankly, I have no slightest idea of what else I can come up with, but yeah, I love to make them from time to time just for the sake of creating something whenever I'm bored.

I basically make them in whatever form I want and just throw them in the box, maybe later I will be able to come up with some more uses for it, but for now just stacking them at the box, along with many other origami stuff. The nostalgy is real though. Back when I was starting it was one of the very first things, that I have making with origami paper and basically learning the whole art from the scratch. Gotta admit, that you have done fairly well anyway as it took your only 5 hours to create some I hope pretty nice washi tapes, but it's hard to go wrong with their design, every single one of them is literally beautiful in their own way. I took much longer, but yes, like I have already said - I was terrible in doing anything related to manual skills, so my learning curve was probably a bit different than for most people.

Nice, I remember my first Washi tapes pretty well as well - they have always brought me a lot of fun, creating them was just so fulfilling, and well the decorating was even better. I remember when I made a bunch of 10-15 Washi tapes and had so many ideas popping my mind, that I literally had no idea on where to apply them at all haha. I was so confused it basically took me few hours before I was able to make any permanent decisions. I was literally applying one here, then swapping it with the other and then applying it to something else. Couldn't decide on the color and design, even though they all looked great I just wanted it to look the best. Realized that it's best to take a pretty much random approach and just apply them by drawing one washi tape from a big box that I have put them all into. If I drew something that color-wise and design-wise doesn't fit at all, then I would draw the next one, but most of them actually fit right of the bat and it stayed like this up to this day. I'm not creating any nowadays though, seems like it's too easy for me now and well, I have no other ideas on how to apply them anyway. By the way Leonard, I'm sure you have already thought of it, but you can try decorate mason jars with them, make some photo frames (this is so far my favorite), make some kind of ribbons (I actually made bunch of them and just gave them to my family on Easter, they were really happy and I believe they all still have them somewhere), use them for your wall shelf, and well, for those a little bit more creative - I saw people doing car tracks for kids.

This is actually tons of work, but can be very rewarding, even if you don't have children yourself you can always give it somebody else or donate them to charity, I'm sure there are people that would appreciate it. It shouldnt' be hard, but as I said - lots of work. I may try this myself as well. Alternatively you can also decorate a corkbord, make an iPhone case, cover some boxes (for example the one you keep your origami stuff). I have actually covered my boxes for origami and washi tapes stuff, looks really great :) Can't think of any of else to be honest. Hope I was of help for you, and of course - great job on creating your first Washi tapes Geneva11!

Looks great SaraXK. I have indeed used them for everything you have mentioned, but you hade made some great suggestions nonetheless - I'm sure many people here will now find a way to apply their washi tapes and come up with their own ideas along. Well, I haven't build a car track with them yet though. I don't have children, but I may as well have soon, so it could be great to start making one in my spare time, especially as it's quite a lot of work, but as you said can be very rewarding :) I will make sure to chip in here once I made it and show you guys some pics and general feedback. But, don't expect me to do this quickly. Unfortunately don't have much time to spend on new hobby projects and well, it's quite a lot of work, especially with my character which needs everything to be done basically near perfection :)

Wow, you have gave me so many good ideas guys. Seems like I have tons of work to do with just Washi tapes haha, but that's great. I will master it to the perfection then as there is really a lot of things, that I can still apply it too. Making a car track's or decorating my whole room seems like a little bit too much for me yet, but I will gladly continue learningon basic stuff, like ribbons or candle wrappers. Will let you know what I have managed to and what I haven't :)

Nice, good job Geneva11. I made some Washi tapes in the past as well and I loved them. Pretty easy, but quite time consuming to make it right. I may try to do make some more as well soon, was actually kind of looking for something to focus my attention and as long a I'm not really a fan of getting back to something, I have already done, it may be a great way to reset my origami imagination a little bit. Then the ideas will start coming hopefully. Although, there is still a lot of ways I haven't yet applied my Washi tapes :P

Wow, it looks like a great option for total beginners (like myself). Starting with making washi tapes for my pens and pencils, which I have lots of will surely teach me a lot. Thanks for mentioning this and thank you others here as well for showing me so many different ways in which I can apply them, my motivations seems to be really strong now.
