Guidance regarding 3D folding

Hello everyone, I am a budding origami enthusiast and I've loved making origamis since I was a kid. My mother used to tell me that I made a paper crane when I was 8, but at that age, I didn't realize the value of my skills in origami. I happened to attend an origami exhibition recently which really left me in utter amusement and that's where I realized that I should learn origami and develop my skills further. So far I have tried my hands on simple folding and made some artworks out of that. Squash folding is my personal favorite and I try to add it in all my works.

Now I'm looking to explore into 3D folding and am curious to make a 3D origami. I read somewhere that squash folds are the basic of 3D folding but I'm not sure. That's why I need a little guidance and advice. I would love to hear out your ideas and experiences with 3D folding. And for your information, I am studying origami mostly from online platforms and I intend to join some classes as well.

I must say that you should join some origami class in order to further enhance your knowledge, but in the meantime, you must start reading books on origami that mentions the various 3D folding techniques. There are plenty of 3D origami books in the market that you should explore before starting to work on 3D models.

https://www.amazon.com/3D-Origami-Fun-Fantastic-Foldable/dp/1440590311/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525780690&sr=8-2&keywords=origami+3D+books This is one of the 3D books that you should really buy as it has all the basic 3D designs which are exclusively used by beginners. You can count on this book for exploring new dimensions to origami art. Best of luck.

I am glad that you are exploring new forms of origami and 3D folding is personally my favorite. I love the complexity and challenges it offers. 3D folding is nothing but simply pieces of folded paper pasted onto each other. It's not like the ordinary crease pattern design but it can be called as a more complex version of origami. 3D folds demand patience and persistence in an equal ratio. For you, as a beginner in 3D design, I would suggest that you should start following some really good YouTube tutorials as you said that you learn from online sources only.

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-3D-Origami-Pieces-Step-by-step-Instruc/ I searched for some basic 3D fold's video and I found this particular video really effective from a beginner's perspective. Watch this video and search for other 3D beginner's video on YouTube as well. Do post your reviews. Best wishes from my side and keep exploring new extents of origami.

I would like to correct the "3D" term which is often misused in the context of origami. Modular origami is a proper and appropriate name for 3D which is used by professionals as well. I'm not quite sure about the others, but I have always known this art as modular origami. Modular origami is the type of paper folding that is used to develop multi-dimensions from a single sheet of origami paper.

Looks like we've got an origami litterateur on board. JeffereyZion, yes you are right. 3D origami can also be referred to as "Modular Origami". But how about keeping the conversation casual and lending a helping hand to MirandaPeter in sourcing an ideal platform to learn 3D folding. Anyways thank you for your sound advice.

My intention was always to help and not correct. The correct term is modular origami and its better if MirandaPeter learns it right at the start.

All the best MirandaPeter for your 3D venture. I wish that you are able to develop some magnificent models and we get to see some interesting posts on your experience along with some pictures of unique and innovative designs.
