Hi friends, I loved playing with paper since I was a kid. I used to make paper boats, dolls, and fans. Recently I made a flower vase that beautifully adorned the hallway. The appreciation I received has really encouraged me to pursue my work with origami even further.

With the holidays round the corner, I have decided to make use of my free time and invest into learning more advanced designs in origami. I eventually plan to decorate my entire house with creative designs like wind chimes, coffee stable art pieces, creative hangings, etc. and give my home a modern look.

I am looking for some suggestions and ideas regarding the decorative items that can be made easily out of origami. I urge the origami enthusiasts to join this conversation and share your creative ideas with me. I too shall share my ideas and creations that you can choose to accept. Looking forward to exchanging some great ideas over this thread.

You are on the right path EllaMathew. Origami is indeed a very creative and modern way to decorate your home. I made an aquarium with some origami sea creatures in it for my kids. They just loved it and their reaction has motivated me as well to further venture out into more creative designs for my kids. My suggestion would be to start your home decor quest with an aquarium.

It's not that difficult to make. You can also create it with the help of a cardboard and butcher paper but make sure that when you paint the model, use a spray paint or acrylic paint that will give a realistic look to the aquarium.

I have also made butterflies and some animals (a cat and a cow) and hung them on the ceiling of my kid's bedroom. They just loved staring at it all the time and to be honest, my younger kid often goes to sleep by staring at the origamis (two birds one stone). For me, it's a win-win situation as I get to practice my art as well as enhance the decor of my house. Here's the link that will give you a step by step procedure on how to design an origami aquarium - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efe_fgbB2fo

Best of luck in redecorating your home.

Oh! I was also working on marine creatures as well but my purpose was to use them as wall hangings. However, an aquarium sounds an equally interesting idea. Thank you hanna_tyler, I shall educate myself further guidance from the video link that you have shared above. Will get in touch with you incase of any further assistance.

EllaMathew, as you mentioned that your holidays are on, I would suggest that you should join a good origami class in your neighborhood. It will give you the right amount of technical assistance to curate innovative origami structures for your home. According to me, you should not just restrict your creativity to just decorating your home but also explore and educate yourself more on this art.

Thank you for your advice AaronHunter. I was never keen on joining any class because I'm not sure if origami is my passion. I just do it out of curiosity to learn a new art, and moreover, to kill time. However, it's no harm to give origami a serious try and see if I have the knack to become a skilled origami artist?

Tell you what, let me ponder over this and give it some thought. I shall let you know my decision. Thank you so much for your suggestion.

hanna_tyler, I happened to read your comment where you were talking about the origami aquarium that you've made with a cardboard and butcher paper using spray and acrylic paint. I am a bit confused about the usage of butcher paper for an aquarium, as butcher paper is light and it lacks the desired strength. So how you did you manage to fold and give it sustainable shapes as in for the aquarium. Please help me out with this query. I've used butcher paper in the past but it hasn't done the job for me. Is there any particular procedure to follow that I've been missing? Please leave your comment and help me out in this situation. Thank you.

Hello markbraxton90, I think you must understand a fact that there is no particular size and texture of paper that is customized for origami. You can use any paper to curate shapes and forms of your choice. Paper selection clearly depends on the folding patterns of a particular structure. If your fold required is simple, then you can stick to ordinary papers like that of a magazine, newspaper, notebooks, etc. as the chances of developing wrinkles are very less. But if your model has a complex fold, then you must shift to other paper types like tissue foils or the much lighter butcher paper.

If we talk about the usage of butcher paper in an aquarium, then I must tell you that these are best for designing complex shapes, as they are flexible and provide good quality adhesive assist in shaping out structures.
