Need your help to make an Origami Vase

I recently began to enjoy origami art and made quite a few items myself. And, presently I am trying my hand at making an origami vase and I have to say, they are the hardest of the lot that I've come across. Till now, I have not found an ideal way to get the shape right; sometimes I get the fold wrong and other times, the entire model lacks the perfection. I have been following the instructions as per http://www.origami-instructions.com/origami-vase.html, but I just can't get it right. I am pretty sure, either I am missing a major step or I have been doing something wrong. Anyhow, looking out for sound advise on what should I do to get that perfect origami vase?

I have also been in your position and can understand your frustration of not getting the form right. While making a vase, it is always better to opt for a thick paper that has the strength to hold the rather complicated design of different structures. With the cuts and folds that you make, you have to be precise and clean, otherwise you will end up with a rather messy result. So, ensure that you keep your work clean and detailed. As you said you are new to this art form, keep practicing and you will get the hang of it soon. Best of luck. Enjoy your new found hobby.

You are not alone in this; I myself have spent hours trying to get the vase form right and failed multiple times. Other than not getting the technique right, I think it has a lot to do with the lack of experience in this form. However, I did find an easy-to-do Youtube Origami Vase tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJJAylwDjEk) that worked for me and I am sure it will help you as well. Do let me know if this tutorial gets that perfect origami vase into shape.

Thank you for your useful tip. It really helped me a lot. After seeing your comment I switched to a hard paper to make my Origami Vase and it worked like a wonder. The fold stayed intact, it gave the base the necessary strength, and overall made the structure come out in a better way. It is amazing how merely using the right form of paper gave the product an entirely different and positive output. Funny how small tweaks solve big problems.

I couldn't agree with you more; the lack of practice does affect the way the vase turns out. I am surely continuing my practice and trying out different forms. I would also like to thank you for the Youtube Tutorial you shared in this forum. It was easy, fun, and ideal for someone who is new to this art form.

I saw that you have suggested using a thick Origami paper to make the vase. I have been doing the rounds in my neighborhood but couldn't find the paper you are referring to. So, would it be possible for you to suggest a source from where I can buy this paper or help me with the name of a particular brand of paper that I could use?

I understand that Origami paper may not be available everywhere. However, don't worry, there are plenty of other alternatives that you can opt for. For example, Art Paper, card-stock, construction paper, etc. are some easily available papers with sufficient thickness that should help you in getting your origami to perfection.

I like to make origami flowers. When I need a larger, heavier square of paper to make a vase, I look in the scrapbook section of my my local hobby and crafts store. There are 12 x 12 inch squares of paper available in a variety of weights and textures with literally hundreds of color/pattern choices available. I use selections from the same source for folding some models when I think it desirable. For some applications I reinforce the vase with a lightweight cardboard liner.
